Chapter 7 - THE ACCOUNT STATEMENT

Erica helped Claire obtain financial records through the ordinary first steps of separation planning, starting with what Claire could already access.

Daniel had once linked a spreadsheet to their shared desktop to show “retirement projections.” He was careless enough not to remove a saved login to the 529 portal.

Claire entered it.

The account history opened in seconds.

The balance that should have been enough to cover Ava’s first year at Boulder had been drained in four withdrawals over eleven months.

Two had gone to Daniel’s business account.

One had gone to pay off a high-interest personal loan.

The last had been transferred only six weeks earlier.

Remaining balance: $3,842.17.

Claire stared at the number until it blurred.

Ava had spent months talking about dorms, major options, and whether Boulder’s winters were really that different from Lakewood’s. All that time, Daniel had already been spending the money.

Erica looked at the screen over Claire’s shoulder.

“This changes the pressure point,” she said.

Claire nodded numbly.

Then she saw one more document in the portal—an unsigned request form to change the account owner contact address.

Not to Daniel’s office.

To Carol’s condo.

Claire called Carol immediately.

“Did you know he moved the mail?”

Carol sounded cornered. “He said Ava would panic if statements kept coming to the house.”

“So you knew.”

“I knew he borrowed some of it.”

Claire closed her eyes. “Borrowed.”

Carol started crying then, the tired kind, not dramatic.

“He said he was waiting on two jobs to pay out. He said he’d put it back before application season. Then it was always one more month.”

The second layer of truth landed harder than the first.

Daniel had stolen from Ava.

Carol had helped him hide it.

And Ava, at some point, had learned enough to stage something desperate at the barbecue.

Claire hung up and sat very still.

Then she made the first fully deliberate choice she had made since the splash.

She told Erica to prepare separation papers and a motion preventing any new borrowing against the house.
