Chapter 1 - THE SPLASH

The lemonade hit Ava’s shirt before Claire understood they had even collided.
Claire had turned from the patio table with the glass pitcher in both hands just as Ava backed into her, phone in one hand, shoulder jerking sharply. A cold yellow sheet splashed across Ava’s forearm and black T-shirt.
“Oh my God—Ava, I’m so sorry.”
Ava recoiled like she’d been struck.
“Don’t ever touch me again—you always do this when nobody’s watching!”
The wooden deck went still.
Family guests froze with paper plates in their hands. The gas grill hissed behind Claire. Somewhere near the picnic table, Carol Whitmore sucked in a breath.
Claire lowered the pitcher, stunned.
“Ava, you backed into me.”
But Daniel was already moving. He crossed from the grill in three fast strides, tongs clenched in one hand, face hard with the kind of certainty that usually came before Claire even had a chance to explain herself.
He snatched the pitcher from Claire’s hand.
“Apologize to my daughter right now,” he said, stepping into her path, “or get out.”
Claire stared at him. Not just because he believed Ava instantly, but because he hadn’t asked a single question.
She tried to step around him toward the sink at the side counter.
Daniel caught her forearm.
“I’m talking to you.”
Claire looked down at his hand on her arm.
Heat rushed through her, not from the grill but from something colder and older—the recognition that he had just done in public what he usually saved for private moments: decide what she meant, what she’d done, and what she owed.
She knocked his hand away.
Then, with all their relatives staring, Claire slid off the thin gold anniversary bracelet Daniel had given her ten years earlier and placed it beside his grill tongs.
“If you believe I shoved her,” she said quietly, “you already made your choice.”
She picked up her purse and headed for the side gate.
Daniel reached after her, but Carol touched his arm.
“Daniel,” she said, voice tight, “I was standing right here. That isn’t what happened.”
Daniel turned toward Ava.
Ava’s smug expression vanished so quickly Claire almost wondered if she’d imagined it.
Ava lunged for the bracelet before Daniel could reach it.
Claire saw that much from the gate.
She kept walking.

But all the way to her car, one thought stuck in her throat:
Why was Ava more afraid of Daniel picking up that bracelet than of Claire leaving?
