Chapter 8 - THE CHOICE THAT COULDN’T BE UNDONE

Claire moved back into the house the following Monday with a civil standby arranged through local police while Daniel was at work.

It was not dramatic. No sirens. No confrontation. Just two officers in the driveway while Claire and Melissa carried in plastic bins and changed the lock code.

Erica had advised Claire not to abandon the property she legally owned. Daniel could stay elsewhere temporarily; his mother had room.

The cost was immediate.

Daniel showed up at six with Ava in the passenger seat and nearly drove through the hedge when the garage didn’t open.

He banged on the front door until Claire answered through the chain.

“You can’t lock me out of my own house.”

“The house is in my name.”

“You’re insane.”

Ava sat motionless in the truck, not looking up.

Daniel saw the changed deadbolt and understood Claire wasn’t bluffing anymore.

“So this is what you wanted,” he said. “Take the house, take my daughter, make me the villain.”

Claire almost opened the door just to stop him from using Ava as a sentence. Instead she kept her hand on the chain.

“Show her the 529 statements.”

He went silent.

“Do it tonight,” Claire said. “Or I will.”

He stared at her with something close to hate, but beneath it Claire finally saw urgency.

Not the urgency of a wronged husband.

The urgency of a man losing control of the story.

He left twenty minutes later with Ava still in the truck and no promise to tell the truth.

That night, after all the lights were out, Claire heard something at the side gate.

She looked through the kitchen window.

A slim shadow stood near the herb planter.

Ava.

She didn’t come to the door.

She only set something on the patio table and walked away.

When Claire stepped outside, she found the gold bracelet coiled beside a folded note:

I didn’t think he’d grab you in front of everyone.
