Chapter 9 - WHEN THE FAMILY PROBLEM BECAME A COMPANY PROBLEM
The investigation did not immediately remove anyone.
It began with interviews.
Document holds.
Board minutes.
Financing communications.
Security-system records.
Email.
Griffin was asked about Claire’s assault.
He admitted striking her.
Osric was asked about April.
He called it a “private father-son argument.”
Mara was asked why she created an undisclosed archive containing footage of corporate officers in a private residence.
That question created trouble she had not anticipated.
She had preserved useful evidence.
She had also done it secretly while serving as corporate secretary.
Independent counsel wanted to know whether she had planned to use private family recordings as leverage for personal advancement.
Osric immediately claimed she had.
“She wants Griffin’s job.”
Mara denied it.
The archive tags did not help.

One supplier shortened payment terms.
A bank requested updated management certifications.
Employees heard rumors.
Griffin sent Claire one message through Adam:
I understand why you protected yourself. I don’t understand why you handed our entire family to strangers.
Claire told Adam not to answer.
The marriage had become part of a larger process now too.
Claire filed for legal separation and sought temporary exclusive use of the townhouse. Griffin moved into a corporate apartment in Stamford without fighting the request.
That restraint confused her.
Then Mara called.
“They found another recording.”
Claire’s body tightened.
“Which one?”
“February eighth.”
Claire searched her memory.
Nothing.
Mara’s voice shook.
“I didn’t tag it.”
“Why?”
“Because I didn’t know it existed.”
The clip had been copied automatically when Mara created the archive but had never been reviewed.
It showed Osric in the hallway with Griffin.
Then Mara entered.
All three remained in frame for nineteen minutes.
According to independent counsel, the conversation changed the meaning of several things everyone believed about why Mara had created the archive.
Claire asked what was on it.
Mara said, “You should hear it from them.”
“From who?”
“The special committee.”

She sounded afraid of what Claire would think of her.
