Chapter 11 - THE PEOPLE WHO COULDN’T CLAIM INNOCENCE
After the February recording, the special committee separated three questions.
Osric’s governance conduct.
Griffin’s assault and leadership fitness.
Mara’s handling of the security archive.
Nobody got to hide behind somebody else’s wrongdoing.
Osric argued the recordings were private family material and had no place in corporate governance.
Independent counsel disagreed where the recordings directly concerned board minutes, investor communication, executive pressure, and refinancing decisions.
Griffin accepted temporary leave as CEO.
That surprised Claire.
He also began individual therapy and voluntarily entered an intervention program focused on abusive behavior.
Claire did not treat either choice as reconciliation.
“He can improve and still lose the marriage,” Adam reminded her.
She already knew.
Mara took a voluntary leave too while the board examined whether she had violated duties by creating and retaining the archive without disclosure.
She called Claire once.
“I should’ve stepped between you.”
Claire answered, “Yes.”
“I was thinking about the file.”
“I know.”
“That’s worse.”
“Yes.”
Mara did not ask for forgiveness.
Claire appreciated that more than she expected.
Then Claire had to confront her own blind spot.
She had seen pieces of Griffin’s fear for years.
The way he became fourteen years old when Osric entered a room.
The way he rehearsed bad news before calling his father.
The unexplained split lip in April.
Claire had accepted Griffin’s lies because accepting them kept marriage uncomplicated.
She had thought respecting his privacy was kindness.
Sometimes it had been avoidance.
None of that made her responsible for the assault.
But if she wanted a different life afterward, she could not keep confusing silence with peace.
The special committee eventually concluded that the February recording supported concerns about Osric’s pressure on corporate records but did not, by itself, prove financial fraud.
More document review was necessary.
Truth had opened the door.
