Chapter 12 - THE DINNER TABLE WITHOUT GUESTS

Osric requested one private family meeting before the independent directors issued their recommendations.
Claire almost refused.
Then she agreed on one condition.
No one would meet at the townhouse.
They used a neutral conference room at Adam’s firm.
Griffin arrived first.
Claire noticed he did not approach her.
Mara came next.
Osric entered last.
“Look at us,” he said.
Nobody answered.
“Forty-eight years of work, and we are letting a hallway argument turn us against each other.”
Claire leaned back.
“A hallway argument.”
Osric ignored her.
He turned to Griffin.
“Take responsibility, return to work, and stop letting outsiders tell you who you are.”
Griffin looked at his father.
“I hit my wife.”
“Once.”
Claire saw Griffin’s face change.
Osric continued.
“And you have spent two weeks crawling like a criminal because Mara saved some home movies?”
Mara spoke.
“You hit him too.”
Osric laughed.
“I raised him.”
“That isn’t an answer.”
“It is to anyone who understands family.”
Mara looked at Claire.
Then back at her father.
“No. It’s the whole problem.”
For the first time Griffin asked Osric the question Claire had never heard him ask.
“Did you want us competing?”
Osric’s expression sharpened.
“I wanted strong children.”
“You told me she wanted my job.”
“She did.”
Mara shook her head.
“Not until you spent ten years convincing me Griffin would destroy the company.”
Osric stood.
“This is pathetic.”
Claire understood then what every Caldwell had been protecting.
Osric protected authority.
Griffin protected approval.
Mara protected information because information was the only form of control she trusted.
Claire had protected the marriage’s appearance because she believed dignity meant handling pain privately.
“Nobody here knows how to be family without managing somebody else,” Claire said.
Osric looked at her.
“You were never family.”
Griffin stood so quickly his chair rolled backward.
Claire tensed.
Griffin did not touch his father.
“Don’t.”
One word.
Osric stared at him.
Something old passed between them.
Then Griffin opened the conference-room door.
“Leave.”
May you like
Osric actually laughed.
Until he realized neither child was moving to stop him.
