Chapter 4 - THE CHOICE THAT MADE HER A PROBLEM

Claire stayed at Leah’s through the weekend.
She redirected her paycheck into an individual account, removed Griffin as an authorized user from the credit card she had held before marriage, and changed the passwords to her personal email and cloud storage.
She did not empty joint accounts.
Adam specifically told her not to make financial moves out of anger.
“Protect access. Preserve records. Don’t manufacture a new problem.”
On Sunday Claire met Griffin at Adam’s office.
Griffin looked exhausted.
“You brought a lawyer?”
“You brought your father into our marriage years ago.”
Griffin winced.
Claire hated that part of herself still noticed when she hurt him.
He admitted the slap.
Not elegantly.
“I hit you.”
“Yes.”
“I shouldn’t have.”
“No.”
“I was out of control.”
Claire shook her head.
“You were very controlled. You knew exactly what you wanted me to do after.”
Smile.
Ice your face.
Go downstairs.
Perform.
Griffin rubbed both hands over his face.
“The company is hanging by a thread.”
“Then maybe stop hitting people who aren’t responsible for your debt.”
He looked at Adam as if embarrassed to have that sentence heard.
Claire noticed.
“What happened April seventeenth?”
Griffin became completely still.
“Mara told you?”
“The camera did.”
Griffin stood.
“I’m done.”
He left without answering.
Adam watched the door close.
“That mattered.”
“Yes.”
Claire’s next decision carried a larger cost.
She declined to attend Monday’s shareholder meeting and informed Caldwell’s independent lead director, Margaret Whitfield, only that she would not participate in any presentation suggesting the Caldwell family had her personal endorsement.
Claire did not tell Margaret about the assault.
Not yet.
The effect was immediate anyway.
Griffin had built part of Monday’s presentation around “continuity of family leadership.”
Claire’s unexplained absence attracted questions.
By Monday afternoon the refinancing vote had been postponed for one week.
Osric called Claire himself.
“Whatever Griffin did, you handle it privately.”
“He hit me.”
Osric did not sound shocked.
“And now twelve hundred employees may pay for it?”
Claire felt something inside her settle.
“You really do think women are where consequences go to disappear.”
Osric hung up.

Thirty minutes later Mara appeared at Leah’s door.
She was holding the folded cocktail napkin from Friday night.
