Chapter 14 - THE LAST THING GRIFFIN ASKED HER TO PERFORM

Griffin and Claire entered mediation three months after the dinner that never happened.

The legal separation had become a divorce petition by then.

Their finances were complicated but not impossible. No children were involved. The townhouse had equity. Both had retirement accounts and independent careers. Griffin’s Caldwell shares required valuation, but Claire was not trying to take control of the company.

She wanted distance from it.

Griffin accepted that.

He also agreed that the assault would not be described in settlement documents as a “mutual marital incident.”

That mattered to Claire more than squeezing another dollar from the property division.

After mediation, Griffin asked if they could speak in the building lobby.

“You can say no.”

Claire almost smiled at how deliberate the sentence sounded.

“Go ahead.”

Griffin kept both hands visible at his sides.

“Dad’s stepping down completely.”

“I heard.”

“Mara may go back after the governance review.”

“I heard that too.”

“I’m probably not going back as CEO.”

Claire studied him.

“How do you feel about that?”

Griffin looked toward the revolving doors.

“Some days terrified. Some days relieved.”

He took a breath.

“I spent my entire adult life trying to prove he couldn’t knock me down.”

Claire said nothing.

“Then I knocked you down.”

There was no excuse after it.

No but.

That was new.

Griffin continued.

“I don’t expect you to come back.”

“Good.”

Pain crossed his face.

He let it stay there.

“There’s one thing I want.”

Claire’s body tightened automatically.

Griffin noticed.

“Not from you,” he said quickly. “For you.”

He handed her the security provider’s confirmation that every recording of Claire had been permanently removed from Griffin’s personal access and preserved only where required by legal or corporate processes.

“You get to decide what stays in your next house.”

Claire looked at the paper.

Thirteen years of marriage, and one of Griffin’s first genuinely respectful acts was giving up access.

It did not repair anything.

That was why it mattered.

Claire folded the page and placed it inside her bag.

“Thank you.”

Griffin nodded.

He did not ask her to smile.

May you like

He did not ask her to forgive him.

He walked out first.
