Chapter 9 - THE MONEY SABRINA NEVER SPENTThe forensic review of household accounts produced a surprise.

I expected to find Sabrina had been stealing for herself.
She hadn’t.
Most of the concealed money went to Diane and Maisie.
School.
Medical.
Childcare.
Travel.
Housing.
The larger transfers had partly supported Diane, yes.
But Sabrina herself had not built a secret fortune.
That mattered.
It made her motive harder to reduce to greed.
She was protecting a lie.
Expensively.
There were, however, legal risks.
The disguised accounting entries.
The Colorado guardianship affidavit.
The North Carolina school application saying father unknown.
And the question of whether Sabrina had interfered with my parental rights knowingly.
My attorneys handled that.
I focused on the girls.
Maisie began sleeping in the bedroom across from Lily.
The first week, she kept food under her pillow.
Crackers.
Half a granola bar.
An apple slice.
The therapist told me not to make a spectacle.
We created predictable meal times.
Snacks always accessible.
No food punishment.
Slowly, the stash shrank.
One morning, I found a dinner roll sitting untouched on her bedside table.
I nearly cried over bread.
Parenthood does that.
Lily adjusted faster.
She announced at preschool:
“I have a sister who was in the wall but now she has a room.”
That required several adult conversations I never imagined having.
