Chapter 10 - SABRINA’S BIGGEST LIE WASN’T THE MISCARRIAGEThree months after I found Maisie, my attorney received old correspondence from Sabrina’s Colorado files.

That produced the major twist.
I had always assumed Sabrina hid the pregnancy because she feared I would leave.
True.
But incomplete.
Six weeks after Maisie was born, Sabrina had actually written me a letter.
A real one.
Eight pages.
She told me everything.
No miscarriage.
Healthy daughter.
Her name was Maisie.
She wanted me to come to Denver.
She wanted to try to repair whatever could be repaired.
She even included a photograph.
I never received it.
Why?
Diane intercepted it.
At first, I was furious at a dead woman.
Then I read the rest.
Two days after writing the letter, Sabrina learned I had begun seeing someone.
Casually.
A woman named Natalie.
Nothing serious.
But Sabrina panicked.
She called Diane and demanded the letter back before it mailed.
Diane returned it.
Sabrina tore the envelope.
Then she wrote in her journal:
If Ryan sees Maisie, he’ll choose the baby and hate me. I need him to choose me first. Then I can tell him.
There.
That changed everything.
Sabrina had not merely been afraid of losing me.
She wanted to secure me first.
Then reveal the child once leaving became harder.
A year later, we were engaged again.
She still didn’t tell me.
Then married.
Still didn’t.
Then Lily.
Still didn’t.
The “right time” was never the point.
The point was leverage.
She wanted enough shared life around me that truth could not easily destroy her place inside it.
And once Lily was born, another fear appeared:
If I discovered Maisie, would I see Sabrina as a mother capable of withholding a child?
Would I question her custody of Lily?
So the lie began protecting itself.
That reinterpreted three things:
Why she rushed reconciliation after our separation.
Why she pushed marriage faster than I had wanted.
Why she insisted on managing every connection between our Atlanta life and Diane.
It wasn’t simply closeness to her mother.
It was border control.

Sabrina had spent six years building a marriage around the location of one secret.
And the secret was a child.
