Chapter 14 - SABRINA CAME BACK TO THE WALLAlmost two years later, we sold the Buckhead mansion.

People expected me to keep it.

Too much history.

Too much status.

Too much money.

I didn’t want it.

The girls disliked the hallway.

Maisie refused to walk past the old service panel alone even after we removed the mattress, repainted the interior and left the door permanently open.

A house is just architecture until a memory claims a room.

Before closing, Sabrina asked whether she could visit once.

I agreed.

No girls.

She stood in front of the wall.

The decorative panel was open.

Sunlight reached inside.

The space looked pathetic.

Small.

Too small for the size of what happened there.

Sabrina cried.

“I kept telling myself she had light.”

I said nothing.

“And ventilation.”

Nothing.

“And a mattress.”

Finally:

“You’re describing why she could physically survive being hidden.”

Sabrina closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

Not why it was acceptable.

She understood now.

She looked at me.

“Do you hate me?”

“No.”

That surprised her.

“I hated you for a while.”

“And now?”

“I know too much.”

Human beings become harder to hate when you understand every weakness that built the worst thing they did.

Harder to trust too.

“I’m sorry,” she said.

“I know.”

“Does that mean anything?”

“Yes.”

“What?”

“It means you’re sorry.”

Nothing more.

May you like

She nodded.

That was enough.
