Chapter 12 - THE MARRIAGE ENDED BEFORE THE COURT DIDI filed for divorce four months after finding Maisie.

Not immediately.

I needed facts first.

Safety plan.

Paternity.

Therapy.

Financial review.

Custody counsel.

I also needed to make sure I wasn’t using the legal system simply as an extension of rage.

By then, I knew.

I could not remain married to Sabrina.

Not because people cannot recover from lies.

Because our marriage itself had been one.

The divorce filing was quiet.

No press.

No dramatic service at a charity gala.

She knew it was coming.

When the papers arrived, she called me.

“Is there anything I can do?”

I answered truthfully.

“To stop the divorce? No.”

She cried.

“To become safer for the girls? Yes.”

That became our only shared project.

Family court did not simply hand me permanent exclusive custody because I was the angry father.

Maisie had a five-year attachment to Sabrina.

Lily loved her mother.

The wall confinement mattered enormously.

So did Sabrina’s deception.

So did Maisie’s existing bond.

Evaluations happened.

Supervised parenting.

Parenting classes.

Individual therapy.

Gradual structured contact.

Sabrina complied.

No missed sessions.

No attacking me through the girls.

No blaming Maisie.

That mattered.

She also corrected the Colorado record and cooperated in adding me legally as Maisie’s father.

For the first time, she signed documents that gave away control instead of consolidating it.

I noticed.

Didn’t reward it with marriage.

Both things could coexist.
