CHAPTER 3

CHAPTER 3 - WHAT THEY STOLE

Sabrina had created the first Haven & Hart formula in 1998, long before the brand had a name.

Back then, she was thirty, newly married, and working nights at a department store makeup counter while Victor chased investors with other people’s ideas. She mixed creams in her kitchen after Celeste went to sleep, writing every ingredient by hand in a red leather notebook.

She called the formula “Haven” because she made it during the year she needed one.

Victor called it cute.

Then profitable.

Then his.

By the time the brand became real, Sabrina’s name had disappeared from every document. Victor said it was temporary. He said investors preferred a clean founder story. He said a wife should trust her husband.

Sabrina trusted him until trust cost her everything.

After the divorce, Victor told Celeste that Sabrina had walked away from the company because she was unstable and jealous. Celeste was sixteen and furious. She believed him because his lies came wrapped in money, private school, and a version of Sabrina that sounded easier to hate.

Sabrina tried to fight it. Then she stopped.

Not because she gave up.

Because her own mother had once told her, “Never argue with a locked door. Find the key.”

For seven years, Sabrina gathered keys.

Old emails.

Lab receipts.

Bank transfers.

A notarized copy of the original formula book.

And one photograph from the night the first investor check arrived.

In the photo, Sabrina stood in a small kitchen holding baby Celeste on one hip, Victor beside her, and on the counter sat the first jar of Haven cream with a handwritten label.

Sabrina had written that label herself.

Victor had forgotten the photo existed.

Celeste had never seen it.
