CHAPTER 6

CHAPTER 6

Owen did not explode.

That was what Madeline had expected.

A scene. A shout. A broken railing. Something loud enough for her to become the victim inside it.

But Owen only stepped back.

First from Caleb.

Then from Madeline.

Then from the life he had been standing inside five minutes earlier.

He looked at Arthur below the pier. “Dad, can you climb?”

Arthur nodded. “I can.”

Owen moved to the ladder.

Madeline grabbed his arm.

“Owen, don’t do this in front of people.”

He looked down at her hand until she removed it.

That small silence embarrassed her more than shouting ever could have.

Owen helped Arthur up from the ladder. His father was soaked, shivering, and dignified in a way that made Madeline look smaller with every breath.

A resort manager hurried over with a towel.

Arthur accepted it without taking his eyes off his sons.

Caleb’s lips trembled. “I didn’t mean for it to go this far.”

Owen gave a broken smile.

“No one ever means for betrayal to become visible.”

Madeline’s confidence finally cracked.

“Owen,” she said, softer now. “We can talk upstairs.”

“No.”

“You don’t want strangers hearing this.”

Owen looked around the pier.

At the waiter.

The concierge.

The elderly couple by the railing.

The family vacation suitcases still lined up like props from someone else’s happy life.

Then he looked back at Madeline.

“I think strangers have heard enough lies for one day.”

Arthur unlocked the phone with wet fingers.

The screen lit up.

Caleb shut his eyes again.

Owen saw the messages.

Not all of them.

Only enough.

Enough to see his wife call him predictable.

Enough to see his brother call him weak.

Enough to see the two people closest to him planning how to move money before Owen noticed.

When Owen handed the phone back, he did not look angry.

May you like

He looked emptied.

And somehow, that frightened Madeline most.
