"She pushed her father-in-law into the sea to silence him, but the phone in his hand exposed her secret affair with her husband's younger brother."
CHAPTER 1
Arthur Whitmore hit the seawater with a sound his family would remember for the rest of their lives.
It was not a scream.
It was not a cry for help.
It was the heavy, humiliating splash of an old man being shoved off a luxury resort pier while his sons stood fifteen feet away with suitcases still beside their feet.
For one frozen second, nobody moved.
The sunset over Cape Harbor turned the ocean gold. White resort villas glowed behind them. The vacation photographer near the lobby lowered his camera. A waiter carrying welcome drinks stopped so suddenly that one glass tipped sideways on his tray.
Madeline Whitmore stood at the railing in her cream vacation dress, one hand still lifted from the shove.
Her face was pale, but not with guilt.
With panic.
Arthur surfaced in the shallow water below, soaked through, silver hair flattened to his forehead. He coughed once, grabbed the pier ladder with his left hand, and lifted his right hand above the waves.
His phone was still in it.
Still dry.
Still recording.
Madeline leaned over the railing, breathing hard.
“That’s what you get for digging into my life, old man,” she said.
Her husband, Owen, stared at her as if he had never seen her before.
His younger brother, Caleb, looked down at the wooden boards.
Arthur looked up at both of his sons.
His eyes were not angry.
That was what made it worse.
They were tired.
Heartbroken.
May you like
Almost gentle.
Then Arthur said, “You were sleeping with my youngest son.”
