CHAPTER 5

CHAPTER 5
Back on the pier, Owen walked toward Caleb like every step cost him something.
“How long?” he asked.
Caleb stared at the boards.
Owen’s voice cracked. “How long have I been standing next to my own brother while he lied to my face?”
Madeline laughed once, short and ugly.
“Oh, please. Don’t make this some sacred family tragedy. Your marriage was dead before Caleb touched me.”
Owen turned to her.
His eyes were wet, but his voice was quiet. “I was working double shifts because you said you wanted a child.”
Madeline’s expression flickered.
Arthur looked up from the ladder.
That was the part he had not known.
Owen continued, each word coming slower. “You said you wanted us to buy the beach house before we started trying. You said you wanted security. You said you wanted a life where nothing could touch us.”
Caleb whispered, “Owen…”
Owen raised one hand without looking at him.
“Don’t.”
The word was so soft that Caleb actually stepped back.
Madeline folded her arms, trying to rebuild her elegance with shaking hands.
“You were never there,” she said. “Caleb listened.”
Owen nodded once.
The nod was not agreement.
It was grief finding a place to sit.
“And you listened to him in hotel rooms paid for by my father’s company?”
Madeline froze.
Caleb looked at Arthur.
Arthur lifted the phone higher.
“The receipts are there,” Arthur said. “So are the messages. So is the transfer Madeline made from Owen’s investment account into the shell company Caleb opened last spring.”
Owen blinked.
That wound landed deeper than the affair.
Madeline’s mouth parted.
Caleb whispered, “Dad, please.”
Arthur’s voice trembled for the first time.
“You stole from your brother while sleeping with his wife.”
May you like
The pier went silent.
Even the employees stopped pretending.
