CHAPTER 4

CHAPTER 4
“Give me the phone,” Madeline said on the pier.
Arthur had been standing by the railing, watching Owen check them in at the resort desk.
Caleb was pretending to scroll through emails.
The sun was low enough to make everyone look softer than they were.
Arthur looked at Madeline and said, “No.”
That one word changed her face.
“You don’t know what you’re doing,” she whispered.
“I know exactly what I’m doing.”
“You’ll ruin him.”
Arthur’s eyes moved to Owen. “You already did.”
Madeline stepped closer. “Owen will forgive me.”
Arthur shook his head. “Maybe. But he deserves to know what he is forgiving.”
Something sharp passed across her face then.
Not fear of losing Owen.
Fear of losing control.
“You think he’ll choose you?” she asked. “You think your sons worship you that much?”
“No,” Arthur said softly. “I think one of them still has a conscience.”
Madeline glanced at Caleb.
Caleb looked away.
That was when Arthur understood the affair was not only betrayal.
It was cowardice shared between two people who had mistaken secrecy for love.
Madeline reached for the phone.
Arthur pulled it back.
“Enough,” he said.
Her eyes filled, but not with tears. With calculation.
Then she shoved him.
Hard.
The moment his feet left the wood, Arthur saw Owen turn from the resort desk.
He saw Caleb’s face collapse.
He saw Madeline’s hand still hanging in the air.

And as he fell, he tightened his grip on the phone.
Because some truths only survive if someone refuses to let them sink.
