Chapter 7 - THE STORY RICHARD BUILT ONE SMALL EDIT AT A TIME

The deeper review did not reveal one giant fabrication.
It revealed dozens of small ones.
Tommy’s elementary school had an online parent portal.
Lauren had once been listed as the primary contact.
After the separation, her email address had been changed by an authorized parent login.
Richard’s.
The new email differed from Lauren’s actual address by one letter.
Messages sent there bounced intermittently.
The school assumed Lauren was unresponsive.
A pediatric therapy office had another problem.
Appointment reminders had been switched from both parents to Richard only.
Two canceled visits were attributed to Lauren because Richard told staff she had failed to bring Tommy during her parenting time.
Family-court records showed the missed appointments among several concerns cited when Lauren’s time was temporarily reduced.
No single incident created the order.
The pattern did.
Then Monica reviewed the week of Tommy’s injury.
Richard originally said Tommy fell from playground equipment Tuesday evening.
Hospital intake happened Wednesday morning.
Tommy said the fall happened inside the house.
Investigators asked why he had gone downstairs.
Tommy eventually answered during a child-focused interview.
“Dad was carrying Mom’s boxes.”
Lauren stared at Monica when she heard.
“What boxes?”
“Tommy described plastic bins. Papers. Clothes.”
The basement storage shelves at Richard’s house were nearly empty during the custody evaluator’s visit weeks earlier.
The storage-unit note said move before home visit.
Now the timeline had structure.
Richard had moved materials out of the house before evaluation.
Tommy followed him downstairs.
Tommy fell.
Richard delayed medical care until morning.
At the hospital, Richard gave a different location for the fall.
Later, when he learned another home visit might occur during the custody dispute, he cut open the medical cast and placed the storage key and note inside.
Then he rebuilt the cast himself.
The facts did not prove Richard deliberately caused the fracture.
Lauren was careful about that.
So were investigators.
But the injury had become entangled with whatever Richard was hiding.
Daniel was asked for a formal medical statement.
He described only what he could support.
The original cast.
The replacement plaster.
The risks of improper recasting.
The delayed timeline reported by the child.
The unusual object placement inside the cast.
No speculation.
That restraint made his statement stronger.
At the end of the week, investigators obtained legal authorization to inspect the storage unit.
Lauren was not allowed inside.
She waited at Megan’s kitchen table for the call.
It came after 7 p.m.
Monica’s voice sounded different.
“Lauren, there’s a lot here.”
“What kind of lot?”
“Your personal records. Tommy’s school documents. Family-court correspondence. Business files.”
Lauren gripped the phone.
“Anything else?”
A pause.
“Yes.”
“What?”
“Boxes of mail addressed to you.”
Lauren stopped breathing.
May you like
“How old?”
“Some of it goes back more than a year.”
