Chapter 5 - THE NOTE INSIDE THE PLASTER
Investigators eventually opened the note.
It was not a confession.
It was much stranger because of how ordinary it was.
Richard had written:
214 — March 18
L papers
school copies
blue file
move before home visit
Below that was a six-digit number.
Lauren recognized the handwriting.
She also recognized the date.
March 18 was two days before a court-appointed custody evaluator had visited Richard’s house.
“What are ‘L papers’?” Monica asked.
Lauren laughed once without humor.
“I’m guessing me.”
“And the blue file?”
“I don’t know.”
The six-digit number turned out to match the access code for the storage facility.
The key likely opened the unit’s individual padlock.
Richard’s reason for hiding both inside Tommy’s cast was suddenly easier to understand.
He expected the house to be inspected.
He did not expect anyone to inspect the child.
Lauren sat in her car outside the clinic after Tommy was transferred temporarily into DCF-approved care with her sister, Megan, while emergency custody issues were sorted out.
She could not stop thinking about the phrase.
L papers.
During the separation, several important documents had vanished.
A folder containing her old tax returns.
Copies of school forms.
A notebook where she had tracked Tommy’s therapy appointments during a difficult kindergarten year.
Richard told her she must have packed them.
Lauren had blamed herself.
There had been a lot to pack.
She left the marital home with two suitcases and whatever she could fit into her Subaru because staying had become unbearable.
Richard had not hit her.
That fact had kept Lauren from calling the marriage abusive for years.
Instead he corrected.
Managed.
Decided.
He changed passwords because she was “bad with technology.”
He handled the mortgage because she “got emotional about money.”
He answered school emails because teachers “respected him more.”
Every choice was explainable alone.
Together they had made Lauren a guest in her own life.
Still, she had believed he would never use Tommy as leverage.
That belief was gone now.
The next morning Richard’s attorney contacted Monica.
Richard offered an explanation.
He claimed the storage unit contained financial records Lauren had threatened to destroy.
He hid the key because he feared she would take it.
Why Tommy’s cast?
Richard said he panicked.
Why did the note mention a home visit?
No answer.
Why were Lauren’s papers listed?
Another answer through counsel:
Marital property dispute.
Then Monica asked the simplest question.
Why hide anything inside a six-year-old’s medical cast?
