Chapter 12 - THE CONVERSATION RICHARD COULD NOT CONTROL

The evaluator required a joint parental interview.
Lauren dreaded it for a week.
Richard arrived in a navy sweater instead of work clothes.
He looked tired.
Older.
For a few minutes they discussed practical things.
Tommy’s school.
Physical therapy.
His cast had been replaced properly and would come off soon.
Then the evaluator asked Richard why he rebuilt the cast.
Richard stared at the table.
“I panicked.”
“About what?”
“The home inspection.”
“Why did the storage unit concern you?”
“Because Lauren twists everything.”
Lauren almost responded.
The evaluator raised a hand.
Richard continued.
“She takes ordinary mistakes and turns them into evidence that I’m controlling.”
Lauren finally said:
“You hid evidence inside our son’s cast.”
Richard looked at her.
“Because you would’ve taken the key.”
“I didn’t know the unit existed.”
“Exactly.”
The evaluator paused.
Richard seemed to hear himself.
Lauren did too.
Exactly.
Richard had just described secrecy as proof that secrecy was necessary.
The evaluator asked:
“Why did you move Lauren’s mail?”
“I didn’t move all of it.”
“That wasn’t the question.”
Richard rubbed his forehead.
“She left things everywhere.”
“Letters mailed after she moved?”
No answer.
Then Lauren asked something she had never asked directly.
“When did you decide I was going to leave you?”
Richard looked at her.
“You already had.”
“No. Before.”
His jaw tightened.
Lauren continued.
“You contacted the custody consultant before I asked for separation.”
Richard looked toward the evaluator.
Then back at Lauren.
“You were pulling away.”
“I was working.”
“You stopped asking me things.”
“What things?”
“Anything.”
For the first time, Lauren saw the wound beneath the behavior.
Richard had needed dependence as proof of love.
When Lauren stopped needing him to manage everything, he experienced it as rejection.
“You could’ve told me you were scared.”
Richard laughed bitterly.
“And you would’ve stayed?”
Lauren did not answer falsely.
“Maybe not.”
His face changed.
There it was.
The fear he had been trying to defeat all along.
“You were going to take Tommy.”
“I wanted shared custody.”
“You say that now.”
“I said it then.”
“You would’ve changed your mind.”
“You don’t get to punish someone for the future you imagine.”
Richard looked away.
The evaluator asked the final question.
“What were you protecting when you hid the key?”
Richard answered after a long silence.
“My son.”
Lauren’s eyes filled.
“No.”
Richard looked at her.
“You were protecting the version of yourself where Tommy could never leave you.”
Richard stood as if he wanted to walk out.
The evaluator reminded him the interview was not finished.
May you like
He sat back down.
For once, he did not control when the conversation ended.
