Chapter 2 - THE FATHER WHO ANSWERED EVERY QUESTION

Clinic security moved Richard into the hallway.
Daniel did not have him arrested.
That was not Daniel’s job.
But as a physician who suspected a child might have been placed at risk, he did have obligations.
Tommy stayed inside the exam room with Elena.
Daniel called the clinic administrator and the hospital social-work liaison.
A mandated report went to the Connecticut Department of Children and Families.
Everything slowed down after that.
Deliberately.
Nobody wanted a frightened six-year-old interviewed by five adults asking the same questions.
Daniel resumed the medical work first.
Tommy’s fracture was healing, but not as well as Daniel expected.
The leg had been immobilized badly after the original cast was removed.
Pressure had been uneven around the ankle.
Nothing catastrophic.
But enough that Daniel wanted new X-rays and a properly fitted cast.
“When was the old cast taken off?” Daniel asked gently.
Tommy stared at his hands.
Richard shouted from the hallway.
“Don’t answer him!”
Security moved him farther away.
Tommy flinched.
Daniel waited.
Finally Tommy whispered, “At Dad’s house.”
“Do you know why?”
Tommy shook his head.
“Dad said the hospital one was wrong.”
That bothered Daniel.
The original cast had been routine.
The medical record confirmed it.
Then Daniel noticed another inconsistency.
The original injury supposedly happened when Tommy fell from playground equipment while under Richard’s care.
Richard told the emergency department Tommy had cried immediately and been brought in within an hour.
But the hospital intake note contained a sentence Daniel had barely noticed three weeks earlier:
Child states leg hurt “since last night.”
At the time, a nurse assumed Tommy was confused about time.
Now Daniel was less certain.
Elena sat beside him at the computer.
“Look at this.”
The patient portal had received four messages since the fracture.
Every one had been sent from Richard’s account.
Questions about swelling.
Questions about weight-bearing.
A request to move the follow-up appointment earlier.
Nothing from Tommy’s mother.
Daniel frowned.
“Is she involved?”
Elena opened the demographics page.
Mother: Lauren Hale.
Emergency contact status: inactive.
Daniel remembered Richard saying at the original visit that Tommy’s mother had “walked out.”
He had said she lived somewhere near New Haven and rarely contacted them.
Daniel had no reason then to challenge it.
Now Richard was shouting in the hallway that nobody could call Lauren because “she’d turn this into custody garbage.”
Daniel looked toward the door.
That was the first time Richard’s panic made sense.
Not completely.
But enough.
May you like
The cast was not merely hiding something from doctors.
Richard was terrified the clinic might speak to Tommy’s mother.
