Chapter 9 - THE MOVE CELESTE NEVER TOLD DAMIAN ABOUT

The deeper motive surfaced through something ordinary.
A job offer.
Celeste had applied six months earlier for a senior hospitality position in Charleston, South Carolina.
Damian knew she had interviewed.
He did not know she had accepted.
The employer had postponed the start date twice.
Why?
Because Celeste kept telling them her family relocation was being finalized.
Damian had never agreed to move.
He discovered the emails while separating shared household accounts and devices under his attorney’s guidance.
The job would have increased Celeste’s income substantially.
More important to her, it was a role she had pursued for years.
When she originally raised moving, Damian said no.
Emma had only recently stabilized after losing her mother.
Her school.
Therapist.
Friends.
Lauren and Allison’s parents within driving distance.
Damian refused to uproot her.
Celeste called it “letting a six-year-old run our marriage.”
He thought the argument ended there.
It had not.
Celeste accepted the job anyway.
Then began pushing a new idea.
Maybe Emma should spend more time with Allison’s family.
Maybe Damian and Celeste could move first.
Maybe Emma could join later.
Damian refused that too.
Suddenly the plan became visible.
If Emma appeared to choose Lauren—
If she appeared afraid of Damian—
If she insisted she wanted to remain near Allison’s family—
Then Celeste could tell Damian the separation was Emma’s choice, not hers.
The marriage could move to Charleston.
Emma could become a weekend problem.
Damian sat with Lauren at her dining table reading the emails.
“She was trying to get rid of Emma for a job?”
Lauren shook her head.
“No.”
Damian looked at her.
“The job was the future she wanted.”
Lauren pushed the laptop away.
“Emma was the person who kept proving she couldn’t control that future.”
That was worse.
May you like
Because it meant Celeste’s resentment had not begun with money or geography.
The move simply gave it a deadline.
