Chapter 12 - CELESTE FINALLY EXPLAINED WHAT SHE THOUGHT SHE DESERVED

Damian and Celeste met during a structured settlement conference months later.

Attorneys were present.

Emma was nowhere near it.

Celeste looked thinner.

Less polished.

Still recognizably herself.

Damian expected denial.

Instead, Celeste surprised him.

“I wanted Charleston.”

“You wanted Emma gone.”

“I wanted a life that wasn’t organized around a dead woman.”

Damian’s expression hardened.

“Allison wasn’t organizing anything.”

“You were.”

That landed.

Celeste continued.

“Every decision came back to her.”

Emma’s school because Allison chose it.

Christmas because Allison’s parents wanted Emma.

The house because Emma remembered her mother there.

No moving because Emma had already lost enough.

No wedding date during Allison’s death month.

No changing certain traditions.

Celeste had felt she was living inside a marriage designed partly by someone who had died before she arrived.

Damian understood the pain.

He did not accept the conclusion.

“You could’ve left.”

Celeste looked down.

“I thought you’d eventually choose me.”

“I did choose you.”

“Not first.”

Damian stared at her.

“You married a father.”

“I know.”

“No.”

His voice remained calm.

“You married a father believing being his wife promoted you above his child.”

Celeste’s eyes filled.

She admitted telling Emma Allison was alive.

She admitted arranging Lauren’s pickup.

She admitted planning to tell Damian that Emma had begged to stay away.

Then she said the sentence that revealed how far she had gone:

“I thought once she was gone for a few weeks, you’d realize how peaceful we could be.”

Damian felt something inside him go still.

Not rage.

Finality.

“You used my daughter’s dead mother to make my house quieter.”

Celeste began crying.

Damian stood.

May you like

The marriage was over.

For the first time, he did not need another explanation.
