Chapter 8 - DAMIAN STOPPED TRYING TO SAVE THE MARRIAGE
Damian filed for legal separation.
He also requested protective conditions preventing Celeste from contacting Emma while the investigation continued.
His attorney warned him not to treat family court like punishment.
“I’m not trying to punish her.”
“What are you trying to do?”
Damian looked through the office window.
“Make sure my daughter never has to wonder whether I’m sending her away again.”
The legal process was not instant.
Statements were collected.
The porch incident was investigated.
Lauren provided her messages.
The school counselor documented earlier disclosures.
Emma’s therapist handled her carefully without turning sessions into evidence-gathering exercises.
Damian’s own conduct was reviewed too.
He had physically shoved Celeste during the confrontation.
He did not hide that.
He completed a voluntary anger-management assessment after his attorney recommended it.
Not because he believed his reaction equaled Celeste’s behavior.
Because Emma had already lived inside enough adult rage.
He wanted his part of the house to change too.
Celeste called him once from an unfamiliar number.
He answered before recognizing her voice.
“You’re destroying us.”
Damian nearly hung up.
Then she said:
“You know Emma was ruining this marriage long before that afternoon.”
He froze.
“What did you say?”
Celeste realized her mistake.
“Damian—”
“No. Say it again.”
“I didn’t mean her.”
“You did.”
Celeste started crying.
“You always chose her.”
“She’s my daughter.”
“And I was your wife.”
The sentence was not shocking because it revealed jealousy.
It was shocking because Celeste spoke as though those roles had been competing positions.
