Chapter 10 - CELESTE DIDN’T INVENT DAMIAN’S GUILT — SHE WEAPONIZED IT
The major twist changed how Damian understood the previous year.
Celeste had not originally planned to convince Emma that Allison was alive.
That began later.
At first, she tried something subtler.
She encouraged Damian to remove Allison’s photographs.
She praised him whenever he traveled.
She told Emma her father became sad when she asked questions about her mother.
She positioned herself as the “safe” adult for conversations Damian avoided.
Then she learned the full story of Allison’s last night.
Damian told her during an anniversary when he had been drinking wine and grieving.
He confessed the final argument.
The words he regretted.
The guilt he still carried.
Celeste held him while he cried.
Months later, she began feeding pieces of that conversation to Emma.
Daddy made Mommy leave.
Daddy doesn’t want you asking about it.
Daddy gets angry when Mommy comes up.
Every statement contained a distorted fragment of something real.
That was why the lie survived.
Emma could see Damian tense when Allison was mentioned.
Could see photographs disappearing.
Could feel him changing the subject.
Celeste did not need to invent his guilt.
She only needed to interpret it for a child.
Three earlier details now made sense.
Why Celeste asked Lauren whether Emma would blame Damian if she knew about the final argument.
Why she wanted old photographs of Allison.
Why she kept describing Damian’s travel as “Daddy leaving again.”
Then came the most disturbing part.
Celeste had never found a woman to pretend to be Allison.
There was no fake mother waiting.
No hidden impersonator.
When Lauren collected Emma, Celeste planned to tell Emma that Allison had “missed the meeting.”
Then another excuse.
Then another.
The promise of Mommy was bait.
Nothing more.
Emma was supposed to leave the house willingly before discovering that the reunion never existed.
