Chapter 2 - The Story Ethan Had Believed for Eight Years

Ethan did not bring Elena and Lily deeper into the mansion.
That surprised Victoria.
It surprised Elena too.
Instead he walked outside, picked up the suitcase himself, and placed it beside Elena.
Then he said:
“We’re not doing this in front of her.”
He looked at Lily.
Not the child.
Not your daughter.
Her.
A seven-year-old who had just been called a brat in a stranger’s marble foyer.
Ethan called his sister Caroline, who lived fifteen minutes away.
He asked whether Elena and Lily could stay with her for the night if Elena agreed.
Elena hesitated.
Then nodded.
Victoria laughed bitterly.
“You’re rearranging the family because some woman appears at the door with a bracelet?”
Ethan turned.
“Some woman?”
Victoria realized what she had said.
Elena heard it too.
For three years before Victoria ever entered his romantic life, Elena had been Ethan’s closest person.
They met when he was twenty-five.
She was working events at a museum.
He was running operations for his father’s commercial-property company.
They were never elegant together.
They ate diner breakfasts.
Got lost hiking.
Argued about music.
Elena knew him before the charcoal suits and foundation dinners became normal.
Then Ethan’s father, Malcolm Cole, suffered a major cardiac event.
The company entered a succession crisis.
Ethan spent months traveling between Columbus, Chicago, and New York.
Elena became distant.
Then she vanished completely.
At least, that was what Ethan believed.
A final email arrived from Elena’s account.
I can’t build the life you want. Please stop contacting me.
Three weeks later, Victoria told him she had heard Elena was pregnant but believed the father was someone Elena met after they separated.
Ethan called.
Number disconnected.
He wrote.
Letters returned.
He went to Elena’s old apartment.
Empty.
Eventually he stopped.
Victoria was there through the worst year.
Friend first.
Then something more.
They married four years later.
Now Elena stood at his front door saying none of that happened the way he remembered.
Before Caroline drove away with Elena and Lily, Ethan asked one question.
“Why now?”
Elena looked at him.
“Because three weeks ago somebody from your family office called me and asked why I’d been receiving a charitable hardship payment for seven years.”
Ethan frowned.
“What payment?”
Elena’s expression changed.
“The money you sent for Lily.”
“I never sent you money.”
Silence.
Lily looked between them.
Elena went white.
“I’ve received a transfer every month since she was born.”
“From who?”
“It always said Cole Family Services.”
Ethan slowly turned toward the mansion.
Victoria stood behind the glass front door.

Watching them.
And suddenly the hospital bracelet was no longer the only thing that needed explaining.
