Chapter 1 - The Little Girl at Ethan’s Door

Victoria Cole had already thrown the suitcase through the mansion’s open front door when Ethan entered the foyer.

It hit the stone steps outside and burst half-open.

A child’s sweater slid onto the wet pavement.

“Take your brat and disappear.”

Elena Hayes pulled seven-year-old Lily against her chest.

Ethan stopped.

He had not seen Elena in almost eight years.

For one second, nobody moved.

Then Elena looked directly at him.

“Ethan… she’s your daughter.”

His eyes dropped to Lily.

Blond ponytail.

Pale-blue cardigan.

One hand locked around her mother’s fingers.

The child looked terrified.

Victoria lunged toward the suitcase.

Ethan stepped between them.

“Don’t touch that child.”

Victoria stared at him.

“You don’t know what she’s doing.”

Elena’s face hardened.

“I know exactly what your wife has been doing.”

Victoria bent, ripped an old hospital identification bracelet from the suitcase, and held it up.

“She stole this years ago.”

Ethan took it.

Printed across the faded band were two things.

LILY COLE.

And Lily’s birth date.

His hands went cold.

“That proves nothing,” Victoria said quickly.

Ethan turned the bracelet over.

A tiny silver authorization clasp was attached to the band.

Private maternity suites at St. Catherine’s had used them years earlier for VIP patients whose family representatives handled restricted access.

The clasp carried an engraved name.

VICTORIA REED — FAMILY REPRESENTATIVE

Reed.

Victoria’s maiden name.

Ethan remembered the year immediately.

Victoria had still been Victoria Reed when Lily was born.

He looked at his wife.

She went completely pale.

Lily whispered from behind Elena:

“Daddy?”

The word almost stopped Ethan’s heart.

He looked back at Victoria.

“You were there.”

Victoria stepped backward.

Elena’s voice shook.

“She was the one who told me you never wanted to see us.”

Ethan stared at the woman he had married.

Eight years of his life suddenly shifted under him.

Because if Victoria had been at Lily’s birth, then Elena had not simply disappeared.

Someone had stood between them.

And Ethan was beginning to understand who.
