Chapter 15 - The Name Lily Wasn’t Ready to Choose

A year after Elena appeared at the mansion, Lily had two toothbrushes.

One at Elena’s home.

One at Ethan’s.

That ordinary fact made Ethan happier than the paternity order ever had.

He knew her now.

Not completely.

Enough to understand that she hated mushrooms, loved astronomy, pretended not to be afraid of thunderstorms, and became silent instead of loud when something hurt her feelings.

She knew him too.

She knew he overcooked eggs.

Worked with music playing too softly.

Forgot where he put his reading glasses.

Could fix almost anything in the mansion except the antique clock in the upstairs hall.

Sometimes she called him Dad.

Sometimes Ethan.

Neither corrected her.

Elena and Ethan became something neither could label cleanly.

Friends.

Co-parents.

People with an old love underneath a new respect.

They did not restart their romance.

Not then.

The divorce from Victoria became final quietly.

Victoria moved to Cincinnati.

She sent Lily one birthday card through Ethan’s attorney.

Ethan asked Elena whether Lily should receive it.

Elena asked Lily’s therapist.

Eventually they gave Lily the choice.

She said no.

They respected it.

No dramatic destruction.

The unopened card went into a file.

The Cole Foundation adopted stricter controls around confidential assistance accounts because one family’s secrecy had exposed a governance weakness.

Malcolm’s role became part of the family history too.

Ethan stopped protecting his father’s reputation from the truth.

Malcolm loved his children.

He also manipulated them.

Both statements could exist.

On Lily’s eighth birthday, Ethan gave her one gift that made Elena unexpectedly emotional.

A small wooden box.

Inside was the old hospital bracelet.

Cleaned.

Protected beneath glass.

Lily read her own name.

Lily Cole.

Then looked at Ethan.

“But I’m Lily Hayes.”

“Yes.”

“Which one am I?”

Ethan sat beside her.

“Whatever name you choose to use.”

“Can I use both?”

“If you want.”

“Do I have to decide now?”

“No.”

She looked relieved.

Then she placed the bracelet back into the box.

“Maybe when I’m bigger.”

Ethan nodded.

“Whenever you’re ready.”

Lily ran outside to join her friends.

Elena remained beside him.

For a moment they watched their daughter through the glass doors.

Elena smiled faintly.

“You finally learned not to make the decision for her.”

Ethan looked at the old bracelet.

His father had decided.

Victoria had decided.

For years even Elena had been forced to make decisions based on lies.

Now the one person whose identity had been managed from birth finally controlled the unfinished part herself.

Whether she would someday become Lily Hayes Cole, Lily Cole, or remain Lily Hayes was still open.

And Ethan had no desire to close it.

Because after eight years of other people deciding what his daughter should know, where she should belong, and who was allowed to love her—

May you like

the most important thing he could give her was not his name.

It was the right to choose it.
