Chapter 12 - The Question Victoria Couldn’t Answer

Ethan met Victoria one final time without lawyers directing every sentence.

The meeting happened in the mansion foyer.

The same place she had thrown Elena’s suitcase.

The suitcase itself was gone.

The memory wasn’t.

Victoria stood beneath the chandelier in a navy coat.

No burgundy dress.

No pearls.

Ethan held Malcolm’s final letter.

“I need one answer.”

Victoria looked exhausted.

“I’ve given you everything.”

“No.”

He held up the paper.

“When my father died, why did you keep sending Elena money?”

Victoria looked confused.

“To support Lily.”

“You could’ve stopped.”

“I wasn’t going to punish a child.”

“Then you knew she mattered.”

“Of course she mattered.”

“To me?”

Victoria’s eyes filled.

There.

The impossible question.

She had cared enough to maintain Lily’s financial support.

Not enough to let Ethan know her.

Victoria whispered:

“I told myself money was the part you were responsible for.”

“And love?”

She looked away.

“I told myself Elena could give her that.”

Ethan stared.

“You divided my daughter’s needs according to what protected you.”

Victoria began crying.

“I was afraid.”

“So was Elena.”

“I know.”

“So was my father.”

“I know.”

“So was I.”

She looked at him.

Ethan’s voice broke for the first time.

“Everyone was afraid. Lily was the only one who had to grow up inside the consequences.”

Victoria covered her mouth.

There was no elegant response.

Ethan continued.

“You said Elena stole the bracelet.”

“I panicked.”

“No. Why that word?”

Victoria lowered her hand.

“Because Malcolm told me to collect the hospital identification material after the family acknowledgment file was closed.”

“And Elena refused.”

“Yes.”

“So it belonged to Lily.”

“Yes.”

“Yet seven years later you still thought it was yours to take.”

Victoria closed her eyes.

The pattern was visible even in one small object.

She confused access with ownership.

Responsibility with authority.

Love with permission.

Ethan asked:

“Would you have ever told me?”

A long silence.

Victoria finally answered:

“I don’t know.”

That hurt more than a lie would have.

Because Ethan believed her.

She had no secret redemption plan.

No envelope scheduled for Lily’s eighteenth birthday.

No moment when she always intended to confess.

She might have carried the lie until death if Elena never appeared.

That truth ended the marriage emotionally before the divorce papers ever could.
