Chapter 14 - Daniel Refused to Save Anyone From Consequences

Daniel’s mother asked him to protect Eric.

Not publicly.

At the kitchen table where she had made grilled cheese for both sons when they were children.

“Your brother could lose everything.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Emma thought she might die upstairs.”

His mother’s face tightened.

“I know.”

“No. You know now.”

She started crying.

“He’s still your brother.”

“Yes.”

That was why it hurt.

Daniel did not contact the board.

He did not call investigators.

He did not soften his statement.

Eric would face whatever consequences followed from evidence already gathered.

Then Daniel met Vanessa.

Not at the mansion.

At a family therapist’s office.

Her supervised-contact recommendation had finally been reviewed.

Emma still did not want visits.

Vanessa respected that.

Noah’s contact would remain limited and supervised if Daniel chose to proceed.

Vanessa looked at him.

“I’m not asking you to take me back.”

“Good.”

A small, sad smile.

“I figured.”

She placed her wedding ring on the table.

Daniel stared at it.

“I’m not asking for a divorce today either.”

“What are you asking?”

“For us to stop pretending the marriage is the first thing that needs saving.”

Daniel looked at her.

Vanessa continued.

“Emma needs to trust adults again. Noah needs stability. You need a life that isn’t built around fixing your family company.”

“And you?”

“I need to become someone who tells the truth before she knows what it will cost.”

For the first time since the storm, Daniel saw something in her that did not look like panic.

Responsibility.

He did not reach for the ring.

He did not push it back.

“Six months,” he said.

Vanessa waited.

“We live separately. We follow Emma’s therapist. We don’t promise each other anything.”

Vanessa nodded.

“And after six months?”

“I don’t know.”

She accepted that answer.

That mattered too.

Before leaving, Vanessa paused at the door.

“Daniel?”

“Yes?”

“When you came into that laundry room, I thought you would hate me forever.”

Daniel looked at her.

“I thought I would too.”

Neither said more.

For once, uncertainty was not a lie they needed to fix.
