Chapter 1 - The Machine That Wasn’t Supposed to Move

Noah’s palms were pressed against the round glass when Daniel burst into the laundry room.
The ten-month-old was screaming.
Vanessa stood beside the front-loading washer, one trembling hand hovering over the controls.
Outside, thunder shook the windows of the Westchester County mansion.
Vanessa looked toward the upstairs hallway.
Then she pressed START.
A beep.
Lights flashed across the control panel.
A heavy mechanical hum filled the room, reflections rushing across the glass as if the machine had begun moving.
The drum itself did not turn.
Daniel didn’t know that.
“VANESSA! WHAT DID YOU DO?”
He crossed the room, pushed past her, and hit STOP.
The hum died.
Daniel tore open the door and lifted Noah into his arms.
The baby clung to his shirt, sobbing.
Vanessa reached toward him.
Daniel knocked her hand away.
“Don’t come near my son.”
“Daniel—”
“Come near him again and you’re done.”
Vanessa did something he hadn’t expected.
She started crying.
Not defensive tears.
Terrified ones.
Her eyes moved toward the staircase.
“Daniel… they said if I stopped the machine, they’d kill Emma.”
Daniel stared at her.
Before he could ask who “they” were, a scream came from upstairs.
“DADDY!”
Emma.
Daniel turned.
A door slammed somewhere above them.
Noah cried against his chest.
Daniel handed the baby back only long enough to secure him in the laundry-room playpen, then moved toward the stairs.
Vanessa grabbed his sleeve.
“They’re looking for something in your office.”
Daniel pulled free.
“Who?”
She wouldn’t answer.
Another crash came from upstairs.
Daniel ran.
He found seven-year-old Emma inside the guest bedroom, crouched between the bed and wall.
She was shaking but unharmed.
The balcony door stood open.
Rain blew across the carpet.
Two men had already disappeared into the storm.
Daniel dropped beside his daughter.
“Who was here?”
Emma buried her face against him.
“One was Uncle Eric.”
Daniel stopped.
Eric was his older brother.
Then Emma whispered the second name.
“And Vanessa’s brother Aaron.”
Behind Daniel, Vanessa had reached the doorway.
Emma saw her.
Her entire body recoiled.

That reaction told Daniel something worse than the names.
His daughter had been afraid of Vanessa before tonight.
