Chapter 12 - What Everyone Had Been Protecting
The first direct confrontation happened two months after the storm.
A private mediation room.
Attorneys present.
No children.
Daniel.
Vanessa.
Eric.
William.
Aaron participated remotely with counsel.
Daniel had not wanted the meeting.
His attorney convinced him that several civil and company issues could be narrowed if everyone stated their positions clearly.
Eric arrived angry.
“This entire thing became criminal because Daniel panicked.”
Daniel stared at him.
“You entered my house.”
“Vanessa let me in.”
Vanessa answered before Daniel could.
“I let you in to take one notebook. I didn’t agree to threatening Emma.”
Eric laughed.
“You knew exactly what we were doing.”
“No. I knew what I had done.”
That distinction silenced the room.
William looked toward his sons.
“I should’ve stopped North Vale when I first saw irregular billing.”
Daniel asked, “Why didn’t you?”
William rubbed his forehead.
“Because the company was losing money and Eric was making the numbers work.”
Eric snapped.
“I kept three projects alive.”
“With fake invoices,” Daniel said.
“With flexibility.”
Daniel almost smiled.
Same family language.
Different generation.
The mediator asked each person what they had been protecting.
William answered first.
“The company.”
Eric: “The company and myself.”
Aaron: “My treatment. Then my freedom.”
Vanessa stared at the table.
“My brother at first.”
She looked at Daniel.
“Then myself.”
Daniel waited.
“And the storm?”
Vanessa’s voice broke.
“Emma.”
Daniel believed that part.
Believing it did not erase everything before it.
The mediator turned to Daniel.
“What were you protecting?”
He thought about it.
“My belief that the people closest to me would tell me when something mattered.”
Eric scoffed.
Daniel looked at him.
“That belief is gone.”
Then Eric made his mistake.
“You think Vanessa would have stopped if I hadn’t threatened to expose her?”
Vanessa looked up.
Daniel did too.
Eric realized too late what he had just admitted.
Not every detail.
Not the upstairs threat.
But leverage.
Coercion.
A relationship of control.
His attorney immediately ended the discussion.
The meeting stopped.
