Chapter 10 - Vanessa Wasn’t Forced Into the First Lie
The major twist came not from the company audit.
It came from Aaron.
Three weeks after the break-in, Aaron hired his own attorney.
He had been hiding at a motel outside Albany after leaving Eric during the storm.
His lawyer contacted investigators.
Aaron was facing serious legal exposure for entering Daniel’s home and threatening Emma.
He wanted to cooperate.
His account did not rescue Vanessa.
It implicated her more deeply.
North Vale had started as Eric’s method of moving excess project money into a pool he could use without normal company scrutiny.
Aaron performed occasional legitimate property inspections, but most of the payments had nothing to do with his work.
Two years earlier, when Aaron entered treatment, Vanessa discovered Eric had access to that money.
She asked Eric for help.
Eric paid the treatment bill through North Vale.
In return, Vanessa agreed to help him make selected project files “consistent.”
At first she changed only dates.
Then amounts.
Then supporting copies.
She knew it was dishonest.
She told herself Eric was correcting accounting problems William had already approved.
Aaron’s statement matched the forensic timeline.
It also reinterpreted three earlier clues.
Vanessa knew exactly why Eric wanted Daniel’s notes because she had helped create the conflicting versions.
She disabled the mansion alarm because Eric had entered through her invitation before.
And when Daniel burst into the laundry room, Vanessa looked terrified not only because Emma was upstairs.
She knew the men were searching for evidence of something she had helped build.
The threats came later.
Months later.
When Vanessa tried to stop.
Eric reminded her that exposing him would expose her too.
On the storm night, Vanessa had planned to give him the burgundy notebook and end it.
But she couldn’t find it.
Emma saw the men searching.
Aaron panicked.
Eric told Vanessa to keep Daniel downstairs if he returned unexpectedly.
Then he threatened Emma.
Vanessa made the most horrifying choice of her life.
She staged danger around Noah because she believed a frightening illusion was safer than defying the men upstairs.
Daniel listened to Aaron’s statement through his attorney.
When it ended, he sat without speaking.
He had wanted the truth to divide everyone neatly.
Victim.
Villain.
Protector.
Instead he found something harder.
