Chapter 8 - Daniel Made the Call That Could Hurt Him Too

Daniel did not confront Vanessa privately.
His first instinct was to drive to the hotel where she was staying and demand answers.
His attorney stopped him.
“If there are active investigations, stop treating this like a marital argument.”
Daniel listened.
The next morning, he went to the police station voluntarily.
He gave a statement regarding Vanessa’s alleged assault on Margaret.
Then he gave a second statement.
About Grace.
His attorney sat beside him.
Daniel did not say he had merely “reacted.”
He said:
“I kicked her when she was on her knees beside my mother. Then I slapped her after she told me Vanessa had pushed the wheelchair.”
The detective looked at him.
“You understand Grace may pursue charges.”
“Yes.”
“And you still want to give this statement?”
“Yes.”
It cost him something to say it.
Not enough to equal what Grace had experienced.
But something.
That afternoon, Daniel told Grace what he had done.
She studied him.
“Are you expecting me to thank you?”
“No.”
“Forgive you?”
“No.”
“What do you want?”
“Nothing.”
Grace looked surprised.
Daniel continued.
“I’m trying to stop making the right thing depend on whether it gets me something back.”
Grace looked away.
“Good.”
Then she left.
No reconciliation.
No relief.
That evening, Vanessa called.
Daniel answered on speaker with his attorney present.
“You reported me?”
“Yes.”
“I’m your wife.”
“Yes.”
“You believe a maid over me?”
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Her name is Grace.”
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“And you believe your mother? She can barely communicate.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
There.
The sentence.
Not confused.
Not scared.
Not misunderstood.
Barely communicate.
Vanessa had finally said aloud what the entire pattern depended on.
Daniel answered quietly.
“I believe they deserve to speak for themselves.”
Vanessa went silent.
Then she said something that made his attorney look up.
“You have no idea what Margaret was about to tell you.”
Daniel felt his stomach drop.
May you like
“What was she about to tell me?”
Vanessa hung up.
