Chapter 4 - The First Time Daniel Finally Listened
Daniel called his attorney the next morning.
Not to attack Vanessa.
To ask what he should do immediately without making another impulsive mistake.
The advice was simple.
Keep Margaret safe.
Keep Lisa safe.
Do not destroy evidence.
Do not threaten Vanessa.
Do not remove her belongings.
Document what happened.
Cooperate with any investigation.
And because Daniel had assaulted Grace, he needed separate counsel regarding his own actions too.
That part stung.
It should have.
Daniel arranged an accessible furnished rental in Buckhead for Margaret, Lisa, and himself while the situation stabilized.
He did not force Grace to return to work.
He paid her outstanding wages and medical expenses without attaching any condition to them.
Then he did something harder.
He told his lawyer exactly what he had done.
“I kicked her.”
“And then?”
“I slapped her.”
“Did she strike you first?”
“No.”
“Threaten you?”
“No.”
“Then do not minimize it when law enforcement asks.”
Daniel nodded.
That afternoon, an adult protective services investigator interviewed Margaret with accommodations.
A speech-language pathologist assisted so her answers could be understood without anyone interpreting for her.
Vanessa was not allowed to speak for her.
For the first time in years, neither was Daniel.
Margaret confirmed the shove.
Lisa separately described what she had seen using her AAC device and gestures.
Grace gave her statement.
Then Daniel gave his.
Including his assault on Grace.
When the investigator left, Daniel sat alone in the rental kitchen.
Lisa entered.
She tapped her tablet.
WHY YOU HIT GRACE?
Daniel looked at her.
Because I was angry seemed pathetic.
Because I believed Vanessa was worse.
“I thought I knew what happened before I actually listened.”
Lisa typed:
GRACE SAID TRUTH.
“I know.”
YOU DIDNT LISTEN.
“No.”
Lisa stared at him.
Daniel wanted to explain.
To tell her he had seen his mother trembling and lost control.
To tell her he loved Margaret.
To tell her he had been protecting family.
Instead he said:
“I hurt an innocent person because I decided her words mattered less than Vanessa’s.”
Lisa looked down at the screen.
Then typed three words.
LIKE YOU DO.
Daniel froze.
“Like I do to you?”
Lisa nodded.
That was the first real consequence.
Not Vanessa leaving the mansion.
Not lawyers.
Not investigators.

And the first thing she used it for was to tell her father he had never truly listened.
