Chapter 1 - The Two Fingers Pointing at Vanessa

The wheelchair was already moving when Grace heard the first violent crack against the staircase.
She dropped the folded linens in her arms and ran.
At the top of the grand staircase, Vanessa stood perfectly still.
Margaret’s wheelchair slammed down another step.
The sixty-seven-year-old woman clutched both armrests, her mouth open in a scream no sound could carry.
“Mrs. Hale!”
Grace reached the lower landing just as the front wheels twisted sideways.
She caught the chair with both hands and drove her shoulder against its frame.
The impact nearly knocked her down.
Margaret remained upright.
Terrified.
Trembling.
Alive.
Grace dropped to one knee beside her.
“You’re okay. I’ve got you.”
The mansion’s front door opened.
Daniel stepped inside.
Vanessa looked toward him.
Her expression transformed instantly.
She ran downstairs.
“She pushed your mother!”
Daniel saw only fragments.
Margaret shaking.
Grace kneeling beside the wheelchair.
Vanessa screaming.
Something inside him detonated.
He charged forward and kicked Grace backward.
She hit the marble floor.
“Get out of my house! You’re fired!”
“Daniel, please!” Grace pushed herself upright. “I didn’t push her—I caught her! Vanessa did it!”
Daniel slapped her before she could continue.
“Stop lying!”
Grace stared at him.
Not angry.
Destroyed.
Vanessa stood behind Daniel.
For half a second, the corner of her mouth lifted.
Grace saw it.
Then Lisa came running from the hallway.
Daniel’s seven-year-old daughter made no sound.
She couldn’t.
Lisa grabbed Grace’s uniform and pulled her away from the door.
Then she pointed.
At Vanessa.
Once.
Again.
Again.
Daniel frowned.
Lisa pointed toward the staircase and thrust both hands forward violently, mimicking someone shoving a wheelchair.
Vanessa’s face emptied.
“Lisa, sweetheart, you’re confused—”
Lisa pointed at her harder.
Daniel turned toward Margaret.
His mother had lived with aphasia and severe speech impairment since her stroke two years earlier. She understood far more than most people assumed.
Her hand rose slowly.
One trembling finger extended.
Vanessa.
Daniel stopped breathing.
His daughter was pointing at his wife.
His mother was pointing at his wife.
Behind him, Grace stood with one hand against her burning cheek.
Daniel looked from them to Vanessa.
“What did you do?”
Vanessa took one step backward.
And for the first time since entering the foyer, Daniel noticed something else.
His mother wasn’t simply frightened.

She was trying desperately to reach the communication pouch attached to the side of her wheelchair.
The pouch was empty.
