Chapter 6 - Margaret Stopped Protecting Daniel
Daniel asked his mother carefully.
Not leading questions.
Not accusations.
He used her board.
DID VANESSA HURT YOU BEFORE THE STAIRS?
Margaret hesitated.
Then pointed:
YES.
Daniel swallowed.
HOW?
Margaret pointed letter by letter.
P U S H.
Then:
G R A B.
Then:
L E A V E.
Daniel looked confused.
Grace, seated across the room, said nothing.
Daniel asked:
LEAVE YOU WHERE?
Margaret pointed:
D A R K.
Grace closed her eyes.
Daniel understood.
Vanessa sometimes moved Margaret into the den when she wanted the main rooms clear for guests.
The den had no direct exterior window.
Daniel had assumed Margaret preferred quiet.
“Did she leave you there when you wanted help?”
YES.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Margaret stared at him.
The question was unfair.
Daniel knew that immediately.
He changed it.
“Did you try?”
YES.
“How?”
Margaret pointed to her communication pouch.
Then toward Grace.
Grace spoke.
“She tried through me.”
Daniel looked at her.
“What did I say?”
“You said Vanessa was overwhelmed and Mom was frustrated adjusting to the stroke.”
Daniel remembered.
He had said Margaret could be demanding.
He had told Grace not to “feed the conflict.”
Margaret’s eyes filled.
Daniel sat beside her wheelchair.
“I made you prove things that Vanessa only had to deny.”
Margaret looked away.
That hurt more than anger.
Lisa sat nearby with her tablet.
She typed:
GRANDMA SCARED WHEN VANESSA MAD.
Daniel looked toward Grace.
“Why didn’t you quit?”
Grace answered immediately.
“Because then they would’ve been alone with her.”
He stared at her.
Grace’s voice stayed calm.
“Margaret couldn’t call you. Lisa couldn’t reliably use her tablet because Vanessa kept taking it. I stayed because somebody needed to see.”
Daniel’s shame deepened.
Grace had not remained because she tolerated disrespect.
She had remained because she was protecting his family from the woman he had trusted over her.
That night Daniel received an email from Lisa’s school.
Her speech therapist had located six weeks of messages documenting Lisa arriving without her AAC device.
Vanessa had repeatedly claimed it was being repaired.
The therapist had offered a loaner.
Vanessa declined.
