Chapter 9 - When Sabrina Learned Who Her Father Really Was

Raymond tried Sabrina next.

He asked her to meet privately at a restaurant near Easton.

She agreed.

Then she told Daniel and Claire exactly where she would be.

That alone showed how much had changed.

Raymond arrived carrying a wedding gift he claimed had been delayed.

A gold bracelet.

Expensive-looking.

Sabrina didn’t touch it.

“Did you send the email?”

Raymond leaned back.

“Your stepfather has turned this into a criminal investigation because he’s insecure.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“He never wanted me back in your life.”

“Daniel paid for the wedding you took credit for.”

Raymond’s jaw tightened.

“That man has always bought affection.”

Sabrina stared.

The cruelty shocked her because it exposed something Raymond could not understand.

Daniel never advertised what he paid for.

Raymond believed money purchased affection because that was how Raymond used money.

He continued.

“I came back because I realized I’d lost years.”

“And immediately needed half a million dollars.”

“That isn’t fair.”

“Neither was missing my graduation.”

Raymond looked wounded.

For one second Sabrina almost apologized.

Old reflex.

Then she stopped.

“You told me you wanted to walk me down the aisle because you regretted missing things.”

“I did.”

“Did you also want Mom’s house?”

“It’s complicated.”

“No.”

Sabrina shook her head.

“Debt is complicated. Lying about why you came back isn’t.”

Raymond’s composure slipped.

“You think Daniel is some saint? Ask him why he never adopted you.”

That landed.

Hard.

Sabrina said nothing.

Raymond saw it.

Pressed.

“You were a minor when he married your mother. Eleven years and he never made you legally his daughter.”

Sabrina left without taking the bracelet.

She drove directly to Daniel.

“Why didn’t you adopt me?”

Daniel looked surprised.

“Because your father never terminated his parental rights.”

“You could have asked.”

“Yes.”

“Did you?”

Daniel paused.

“No.”

“Why?”

He looked down at his callused hands.

“Because when you were sixteen, you told your mother you hated when people acted like your dad was dead.”

Sabrina remembered.

Barely.

“I thought respecting that meant not asking you to replace him legally.”

Her eyes filled.

“You could’ve told me.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“Because I thought not pressuring you was kindness.”

Sabrina sat across from him.

Everyone in this family had confused silence with kindness.

Daniel.

Claire.

Even Sabrina herself.

Raymond simply weaponized the empty spaces.

Then Daniel’s attorney called.

They had found the downloaded Helen-signature file on Raymond’s cloud-storage account.

The first hard evidence directly connected him to the attempted trust manipulation.

The conflict had finally moved beyond family interpretation.
