Chapter 1 - The Suit Claire Destroyed

Claire Mercer was already cutting through Daniel’s wedding jacket when he stepped into the bridal suite.

The scissors sliced straight across the lapel he had spent two evenings hand-stitching after the tailor rushed the alteration.

Sabrina stood beside the mirror in her ivory bridal robe and watched.

She did not stop her mother.

Claire made one final cut, let the ruined charcoal jacket fall at Daniel’s feet, and looked at his hands.

Callused.

Scarred.

Still faintly stained around one thumbnail from repairing a cabinet door at the venue that morning.

“Those hands don’t belong in her wedding photos.”

Daniel said nothing.

He bent and picked up the jacket.

He had paid the florist that week.

The caterer the month before.

The remaining venue balance at six that morning because Sabrina’s card had unexpectedly declined.

For eleven years, he had paid for braces, college tuition gaps, car repairs, two apartments, and now most of a wedding that had somehow grown to nearly two hundred guests.

None of that made him Sabrina’s biological father.

Daniel knew that.

He had simply never expected it to make him disposable.

Sabrina moved toward Raymond Cole.

Her biological father had arrived forty-five minutes earlier in a navy suit that probably cost more than Daniel’s first truck.

Raymond had missed Sabrina’s high-school graduation.

Missed most birthdays between thirteen and twenty-one.

Missed the year she tore her ACL.

Now photographers were waiting downstairs.

Sabrina looked at Daniel.

“Raymond’s walking me down the aisle.”

The sentence came carefully, as though careful delivery could make cruelty sophisticated.

Daniel glanced at Raymond.

Raymond smiled.

“Blood matters on a day like this.”

Daniel folded the torn jacket over his forearm.

Then he walked toward the ballroom doors.

Raymond followed.

Daniel put one hand against the doorframe.

“You’re not going in yet.”

Claire laughed sharply.

“Daniel, don’t embarrass yourself.”

He looked at Raymond.

“Then you’d better check who owns this place.”

The smile left Raymond’s face for half a second.

Claire recovered first.

She reached into her handbag and pulled out several sheets clipped together.

A mortgage application.

She waved it once.

“After tonight, your house pays Raymond too.”

Daniel stared at the papers.

Then, unexpectedly, smiled.

He crossed to the venue manager’s desk and pulled a deep-burgundy legal folder from beneath it.

Raymond grabbed it before Claire could.

He opened the first page.

His expression changed.

Claire saw it.

“What?”

Raymond looked at her.

Then at Daniel.

Something in their plan no longer fit.

Daniel took the folder back and turned one page toward Claire, keeping the signature block covered with his hand.

“Read whose permission you need.”

Sabrina stepped closer.

Claire’s lips parted.

Because the document did not say Daniel Mercer had sole authority over the house.

May you like

It said something far worse for her.

The property she planned to mortgage had never belonged to the marriage at all.
