Chapter 7 - The Pattern Hidden in Claire’s Phone

Daniel’s attorney advised him not to accuse anyone yet.
So Daniel did something he disliked.
He waited.
The email header showed it was sent from Daniel’s actual account three nights before the wedding.
At 11:48 p.m.
Daniel had been asleep.
Claire had been downstairs.
That alone proved nothing.
They shared Wi-Fi.
Claire knew his laptop password because he had never considered his wife a security risk.
The attorney asked Daniel whether he wanted a forensic review.
He said yes.
The decision embarrassed him.
Marriage was not supposed to require device logs.
Then Claire surprised him.
She handed over her phone.
“I didn’t send it.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Did Raymond?”
Claire swallowed.
“He used my laptop once.”
“When?”
“Last week.”
“For what?”
“He said his phone wasn’t loading a lender portal.”
Daniel’s attorney asked whether Raymond knew Daniel’s email password.
Claire shook her head.
Then stopped.
“He watched me pay the venue balance from Daniel’s computer.”
The room changed.
Daniel used the same password across far too many old accounts.
A bad habit.
Not a crime.
But a bad habit someone observant could exploit.
The forensic review took days.
During that time, Sabrina discovered her own pattern.
Raymond had been asking questions since reappearing six months earlier.
Was the house paid off?
Did Daniel own it before marrying Claire?
Was there a trust?
Did Claire have retirement savings?
How much did Sabrina think the wedding venue was worth?
At the time, the questions sounded like financial curiosity from a man trying to reconnect.
Now they sounded like inventory.
Sabrina called Daniel one evening.
“I feel stupid.”
“You’re not.”
“I wanted him to be my dad.”
“He is your biological father.”
“You know what I mean.”
Daniel did.
“Wanting somebody to become better doesn’t make you stupid.”
“What does it make Mom?”
Daniel paused.
“Human.”
Sabrina laughed bitterly.
“You’re still defending her.”
“No.”
“I’m trying not to simplify her so I can feel cleaner.”
That answer stayed with Sabrina.
Two days later, the forensic report arrived.
Daniel’s email had been accessed from Claire’s laptop at 11:42 p.m.
The login used his correct password.
At 11:48 the approval email was sent.
At 11:51, the login history showed a search for:
Mercer Family Residence Trust co-trustee consent waiver
At 12:03, someone opened a PDF Claire had downloaded months earlier containing Helen’s signature.
Daniel stared at the timeline.
May you like
They had not only tried to use his identity.
Someone had started looking for Helen’s too.
