Chapter 4 - The Decision Daniel Made Before the Ceremony

Daniel could have exposed everything immediately.

Two hundred guests were downstairs.

Raymond’s business partners were there.

Claire’s closest friends were there.

Sabrina’s future in-laws were ten minutes away from watching her walk down the aisle.

Public humiliation would have been easy.

Daniel chose something harder.

He closed the burgundy folder.

“The wedding continues.”

Claire looked surprised.

Raymond looked relieved.

Sabrina looked confused.

Daniel pointed toward Raymond.

“You stay away from the venue office and from any financial paperwork.”

Then to Claire.

“We talk after the ceremony.”

Claire scoffed.

“You don’t get to issue orders.”

“No.”

Daniel lifted his ruined jacket.

“But I do get to decide whether I spend the next hour turning Sabrina’s wedding into punishment for what you did.”

Sabrina stared at him.

Something in her face cracked.

Daniel continued.

“Raymond can walk you down the aisle if that’s still what you want.”

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Daniel changed into the spare white shirt he had brought for cleanup after the reception and sat in the back row during the ceremony.

Not the family row.

The back.

Claire looked once over her shoulder.

Sabrina looked three times.

Raymond walked her down the aisle.

Guests smiled.

Phones rose.

The pictures looked perfect.

Daniel knew photographs lied easily.

At the reception, he did not give the father-of-the-bride toast he had written.

Raymond did.

He spoke about “watching Sabrina grow into an extraordinary woman.”

Daniel kept his expression neutral.

Raymond had not watched.

But Daniel no longer needed to correct every lie in public.

The first serious consequence arrived during dinner.

Daniel received a call from Helen.

He stepped outside.

“The lender contacted the trust,” she said.

“Already?”

“They’re trying to verify collateral authority.”

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“How much is the loan?”

“Four hundred eighty thousand.”

He stopped walking.

Claire had told him Raymond needed “temporary capital” for a restaurant partnership.

Daniel assumed perhaps fifty thousand.

Not nearly half a million dollars.

“What is the project?”

“That’s the other reason I’m calling.”

Helen’s voice changed.

“There is no restaurant partnership.”

Daniel stared through the ballroom glass at Raymond laughing beside Sabrina.

“What is it?”

“A debt consolidation loan.”

“For Raymond?”

“Mostly.”

“How bad?”

Helen exhaled.

“Bad enough that your wife has already pledged something else.”

Daniel felt his stomach drop.

“What?”

“Her retirement account.”

He closed his eyes.

Claire had not merely gambled Daniel’s home.

May you like

She had already started gambling her own future.

And somebody had convinced her the house was next.
