Chapter 3 - THE HOUSE LINDA THOUGHT EDWARD OWNED

Linda followed Edward into the living room.

“You told me your mother signed it over years ago.”

“I said she intended the house to come to me.”

“You said half of it was already yours.”

Margaret stood in the kitchen doorway.

“No part of this house belongs to Edward.”

Edward rubbed both hands over his face.

Linda looked from him to Margaret as though someone had changed the language around her.

For months, Edward had told Linda that Margaret owed him the house because he saved it after Harold’s death. According to him, Margaret had nearly lost the bungalow to unpaid taxes and medical bills until Edward paid everything.

Linda believed the temporary move was the beginning of a permanent transfer.

That explained why she changed the mailing address on their bank accounts before moving in.

Why she enrolled Noah in a neighborhood summer program using Margaret’s address.

Why she brought a locksmith’s brochure and measured the basement for a home office.

Margaret knew Edward had helped her eleven years earlier.

She did not know he had turned that help into a private ownership story.

“I never promised you this house,” she said.

Edward looked at the floor.

“You said you could never repay me.”

“That isn’t the same thing.”

“It felt the same when you needed the money.”

Emma had gone still at the table.

Margaret noticed her expression.

“What is it?”

Emma looked at her father.

Edward shook his head once.

It was small, almost invisible.

Emma saw it anyway.

“When Grandma almost lost the house,” she said, “where did the money come from?”

Edward’s voice sharpened.

“This has nothing to do with you.”

May you like

Emma stood.

“That usually means it does.”
