Chapter 15 - THE PLATE MARGARET CARRIED INSIDE
The bungalow sale closed on schedule.
Margaret’s repayment was transferred to Emma through Gabriella’s trust account. Edward’s monthly payments began the following month.
Linda and Edward separated but did not immediately file for divorce. They arranged a parenting schedule for Noah and attended financial counseling separately.
Edward’s company survived as a smaller operation with no employees beyond him and one bookkeeper.
He lost the identity of a successful owner before he learned whether he could build a more honest one.
Emma began work on a medical-surgical floor at Swedish Hospital. She used part of the recovered money to clear her student loans and placed the rest in an account managed only by her.
She visited Margaret’s apartment twice during the first month.
On the second visit, she brought the old wall phone.
“The buyers were going to throw it away,” Emma said.
Margaret placed it on a narrow shelf near the kitchen, disconnected and silent.
Linda sent an apology letter.
It contained no claim that she had been protecting Noah, no accusation against Edward, and no request to move back into Margaret’s life.
Margaret read it once and placed it beside Harold’s faded emergency numbers.
Edward did not attend Emma’s hospital orientation.
Emma had never called to invite him.
Three weeks later, he mailed her a card with no money inside and no explanation of what he had intended to do.
It said only:
I know waiting for forgiveness is not the same as earning it.
Emma showed the card to Margaret but took it home again.
On a cold Sunday evening, Margaret cooked roast chicken in her new apartment.
There was barely enough space for four plates.
Emma sat near the window. Noah colored at the small table while Linda waited downstairs to collect him.
One chair remained empty.
Margaret filled a plate and set it on the counter.
Emma looked at it.
“Is Dad coming?”
“He didn’t ask.”
“Would you let him?”
Margaret rested one hand beside the silent wall phone.
The buzzer sounded from downstairs.
For a moment, neither woman moved.

Then Margaret picked up the extra plate and carried it toward the table instead of the hallway.
Whether the visitor was Edward or only Linda, she would decide whom to admit after she looked through the glass.
