Chapter 2 - WHAT GABRIELLA WAS REMOVING
Gabriella Marino was not a mover.
She was an elder-law attorney Margaret had met six weeks earlier after a bank employee called about an unusual home-equity inquiry.
Edward’s name appeared on the inquiry as Margaret’s financial agent.
Margaret had never authorized him to apply for a loan.
She had signed a limited power of attorney during knee surgery two years earlier, allowing Edward to pay bills while she recovered. The document expired after ninety days.
Someone had uploaded it to a lender as though it were still active.
Gabriella had prepared what she called the removal package.
Edward would be removed as an authorized user from Margaret’s checking account, emergency contact from her investment account, backup agent from her health directive, and administrator of the online portal connected to the house.
A title-monitoring alert would be placed on the property.
The lender would receive written notice that Edward had no authority to borrow against it.
Nothing about the call threw anyone into the street that night.
It simply removed the invisible permissions Edward had been relying upon.
Linda pushed away from the table.
“You went to a lawyer behind our backs?”
Margaret looked at her. “You moved into my house with a plan you didn’t explain.”
“We came because you said you needed help.”
“I said Edward could stay while his business recovered.”
“With his family,” Linda snapped.
Emma quietly moved Noah’s milk farther from the edge of the table.
Edward noticed.
“Emma, take Noah upstairs.”
“No,” Margaret said. “Nobody is being sent away because the truth is uncomfortable.”
Edward stepped toward the wall phone.
“What exactly did you tell Gabriella?”
“The truth I knew.”
His face tightened.
Margaret continued.
“I told her someone used an expired document to ask how much could be borrowed against this house.”
Linda turned toward Edward.
“You said she’d already agreed.”
Edward did not answer.
Margaret had expected anger.

She had not expected Linda’s confusion.
That was the first sign that Edward had given his wife a different version too.
