Chapter 12 - WHAT LINDA WANTED FROM THE HOUSE

Linda requested one final family meeting before the sale closed.
She arrived without Edward.
Noah stayed with a neighbor.
Emma attended remotely with her attorney.
Linda sat at the same dining table where she had ordered Margaret outside.
“I thought this house meant we were safe,” she said.
Her father had lost their childhood home after a foreclosure when Linda was fourteen. Her family moved through three apartments in two years. She learned to measure security through property, keys, and whose name appeared on the mailbox.
When Edward told her Margaret owed him the bungalow, Linda saw a permanent home for Noah.
She also saw proof that years of supporting Edward’s unstable business would lead somewhere.
“That explains why you wanted the house,” Margaret said. “It doesn’t explain why you humiliated me.”
Linda looked toward the back door.
“Edward said kindness made you delay decisions.”
“So cruelty was strategy?”
“Yes.”
The direct answer changed the room.
Linda did not blame her childhood or Edward for pointing at the door. She admitted choosing the words because she wanted Margaret frightened enough to surrender.
Emma asked whether Linda knew her money saved the house.
“No.”
“Would it have mattered?”
Linda hesitated.
That hesitation was answer enough.
Edward arrived late despite not being invited. He remained near the doorway.
He said he wanted everyone to stop speaking as though he had planned eleven years of harm.
Emma’s voice came through the laptop.
“You planned each day you didn’t tell me.”
Edward moved closer to the screen.
“I was trying to repay you.”
“You were trying to avoid becoming the father who took it.”
Edward had no response.
The family had finally reached the truth each person was protecting.
Linda wanted security.
Edward wanted to remain the rescuer.
Margaret wanted to believe dependence was love.

Emma wanted her mother’s final gift to have belonged to her.
No explanation could give all four of them what they wanted.
