Chapter 5 - GRANT ALWAYS CALLED CONTROL “CONSISTENCY”

Grant agreed to meet his mother only after his attorney advised him that refusing all family communication was making things worse.

They met in a therapist’s office.

Evelyn came with no intention of being polite.

Grant came defensive.

“You’ve always undermined me.”

“This is about Maisie.”

“It’s always about whoever you decide needs rescuing.”

Evelyn leaned forward.

“She is three.”

“And she knows exactly how to play adults against each other.”

That sentence frightened Evelyn more than his anger.

“You think a three-year-old is manipulating you?”

“She knows if she cries to you, you overturn every boundary I set.”

“What boundary did the flooded bedroom enforce?”

Grant looked away.

“The water wasn’t supposed to overflow.”

“But you still held the key.”

“She was safe.”

“She was screaming for you.”

“She screams whenever she doesn’t get her way.”

Evelyn felt suddenly exhausted.

For years Grant had translated emotional reactions into tactical behavior.

Crying became manipulation.

Seeking comfort became disobedience.

Calling Grandma became undermining Dad.

Loving Hannah became unhealthy dependency.

The therapist asked him where those beliefs came from.

Grant answered immediately.

“My mother.”

Evelyn stared.

He continued.

“You rescued me from every consequence.”

“That is not true.”

“You called teachers.”

“You were dyslexic and one teacher humiliated you.”

“You defended me against Dad.”

“Your father could be cruel.”

“You always had an explanation for why I needed protecting.”

Grant’s jaw tightened.

“And now you’re doing it to Maisie.”

The accusation landed because part of it was true.

Evelyn had protected Grant often.

Sometimes correctly.

Sometimes so quickly that he never had to sit with discomfort long enough to take responsibility.

But Grant had drawn the wrong lesson.

Evelyn believed children deserved adults who made them safe.

Grant believed safety made children weak.

So he created fear deliberately.

Then called it resilience.
