Chapter 11 - EVELYN REALIZED RESCUING GRANT AGAIN WOULD HURT MAISIE

Grant called Evelyn late one night.
“Mom.”
His voice sounded younger.
Broken.
“I’m losing everything.”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Every maternal instinct activated.
Come home.
I’ll fix it.
Let me explain you to everyone.
The old pattern.
Then she pictured Maisie behind the glass door.
“Are you in danger?”
“No.”
“Are you thinking about hurting yourself?”
“No.”
“Then call your therapist.”
Grant went silent.
“You won’t even talk to me?”
“I’m talking.”
“No. You’re choosing them.”
There it was.
Again.
Choice.
Sides.
Loyalty.
Evelyn’s voice softened.
“I love you.”
“If you loved me, you’d help me get my daughter back.”
“No.”
Grant inhaled sharply.
“I love you enough not to help you avoid why she isn’t with you.”
He hung up.
Evelyn cried afterward.
Not because she regretted it.
Because boundaries hurt even when they were right.
The next morning Maisie climbed into Evelyn’s bed.
“Grandma?”
“Yes?”
“Daddy mad at you?”
Evelyn chose her words carefully.
“Daddy is having big feelings.”
“Because I came here?”
“No.”
Maisie stared.
“This is not because you came here.”
That sentence needed repetition.
Not because you called Hannah.
Not because you wanted Grandma.
Not because you cried.
Not because you loved someone.
Evelyn suddenly understood the core repair Maisie needed.
Grant had taught her relationships disappeared when she asked for them.
The adults now had to prove the opposite.
Safe people could leave a room.
Go to work.
Disagree.

Set limits.
And still come back.
