Chapter 12 - VANESSA SAID THE PART THAT MADE GRANT STOP TALKING

Months later Grant and Vanessa met during a structured marital session.

They were still legally married.

Living separately.

Vanessa had not decided whether to divorce.

Grant expected her to apologize for exposing him.

She did not.

“I should have spoken sooner.”

Grant nodded sharply.

“Finally.”

Vanessa continued:

“To everyone else.”

His expression changed.

“I should’ve told Evelyn about Hannah.”

“Of course.”

“I should’ve told the pediatrician Maisie was becoming afraid of closed doors.”

Grant’s jaw tightened.

“I should’ve told you I was scared of how you treated attachment like betrayal.”

“You were never scared of me.”

“I was scared of what happened when I disagreed.”

“That’s not the same thing.”

Vanessa looked at him.

“You’re right.”

Grant blinked.

“I wasn’t afraid you’d hit me.”

She leaned forward.

“I was afraid you’d make me prove I loved you by abandoning whoever disagreed with you.”

Silence.

Hannah.

Evelyn.

Friends Vanessa stopped calling.

Her sister, after Grant said she meddled.

Even Maisie, when Vanessa was pressured to support punishments she privately hated.

Grant’s entire system depended on people treating loyalty as isolation.

Vanessa finally named it.

“You don’t ask people to love you.”

Her voice trembled.

“You ask them to prove nobody else matters as much.”

Grant looked away.

“And when Maisie couldn’t do that because she was three, you punished her.”

He stood abruptly.

The therapist asked him to sit.

Grant did not.

At the door Vanessa said:

“The last person Maisie kept asking for was Hannah.”

Grant stopped.

“And you made Hannah disappear from her life.”

He turned.

Vanessa’s expression did not change.

“You were trying to do the same thing to your mother.”

Grant left.

May you like

But he had heard it.

For once, nobody chased him.
