Chapter 4 - VANESSA’S SILENCE HAD A HISTORY

Evelyn met Vanessa at a coffee shop the next morning.

No Grant.

No Maisie.

Vanessa looked like she had not slept.

Evelyn did not ease into it.

“You knew about Hannah.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Grant was isolating Maisie from her.”

“Yes.”

“And you said nothing.”

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“I said things.”

“To whom?”

“Grant.”

Evelyn almost laughed.

“That worked beautifully.”

Vanessa absorbed it.

Then she explained.

The marriage had changed slowly.

Grant did not begin by screaming.

He questioned.

Why did Vanessa disagree with him in front of Maisie?

Why did she need to call her sister after arguments?

Why did she tell Evelyn so much?

Why did every problem become someone else’s business?

Then came consequences.

If Vanessa discussed a disagreement with Evelyn, Grant canceled dinner plans.

If Maisie ran to Vanessa after Grant corrected her, he accused Vanessa of undermining him.

If Vanessa defended Hannah, Grant said she was choosing an employee over her husband.

“Everything became loyalty.”

Evelyn stared at her.

“You were afraid of him?”

Vanessa considered the word.

“Not because I thought he’d hit me.”

“Then what?”

“Because he could make you feel like every relationship outside him was proof you were betraying him.”

That sounded familiar.

Grant had done variations of it since adolescence.

Sulking when Evelyn liked one girlfriend more than another.

Demanding to know why his father discussed problems with friends.

Going cold when someone challenged him publicly.

Evelyn had called him private.

Sensitive.

Proud.

Different words for the same thing.

Vanessa reached into her bag.

“I kept this because I knew someday he’d say Hannah was lying.”

Not secret video.

Not stolen files.

Printed text messages Grant himself had sent Vanessa during the week Hannah left.

One read:

If Maisie keeps reaching for Hannah every time she’s upset, Hannah is the problem.

Another:

She needs to learn comfort comes from her parents, not whoever gives her what she wants.

Then the final message:

Hannah goes or I do.

Evelyn read it twice.

“You chose him.”

Vanessa cried.

“Yes.”

“And Maisie paid for it.”

“Yes.”

For the first time, Vanessa did not defend herself.

May you like

That mattered.

It did not erase six months.
