Chapter 9 - The Person Who Still Had a Key

The mansion’s access system held ninety days of entry logs.

Daniel had assumed the storage wing was rarely used.

He was wrong.

A service entrance beside the garage had been opened seven times after midnight during the previous two months.

The code belonged to a contractor profile.

CARTER RENOVATION — MASTER.

Vanessa had created it four years earlier.

She claimed she forgot it still worked.

Daniel believed that part.

The harder question was who knew the code.

The renovation company produced old employee records.

One name mattered immediately.

James Mercer.

Not the former CFO himself.

His son.

Evan Mercer had worked as a specialty carpenter during the mansion renovation.

Rebecca stared at the file.

“Coincidence?”

Daniel shook his head.

“Not anymore.”

Security footage from the current cameras did not cover the internal storage-room doorway, but the driveway camera preserved partial vehicle images.

A dark SUV had arrived on three of the recorded nights.

The plate was unreadable.

Daniel resisted the temptation to turn blurry footage into certainty.

Then the retired estate attorney’s archived file arrived.

Inside was a letter from Walter Carter dated eight days before his death.

Daniel read it at the dining table where his father had once carved Thanksgiving turkey.

If the liquidity plan becomes necessary, James understands the temporary property disposition. My children are not to be involved until the company stabilizes.

Rebecca swore softly.

Daniel continued.

Another attachment authorized James Mercer to prepare emergency transactions.

But it did not authorize Rebecca’s signature.

Nor Daniel’s.

Company counsel said the document might explain motive.

Not legality.

Then the attorney file provided something even stranger.

A handwritten instruction:

Rebecca’s trust shortfall must be corrected before final distribution.

Rebecca went completely still.

“My what?”

Daniel looked at her.

Rebecca had received her inheritance eleven years earlier.

No one had mentioned a shortfall.

Cynthia requested the trust accounting.

Before it arrived, James Mercer finally responded through counsel.

He would cooperate voluntarily.

One condition.

The meeting had to include Daniel and Rebecca.

Not Vanessa.

Rebecca frowned.

“Why exclude her?”

Daniel knew the answer before James’s attorney confirmed it.

“Because James says Vanessa was never supposed to find Walter’s private ledger.”

The hidden room suddenly looked different.

Maybe Vanessa had not discovered the family’s worst secret.

May you like

Maybe she had interrupted a secret that had been maintained long before she became a Carter.

And James believed Daniel and Rebecca still did not know the most important part.
